“i’m a dysfunctional veteran, leave me alone”

i haven’t been taking many pictures lately. after my critique with jim i have been doing a lot of introspective thinking about my approach to taking pictures. i have been trying to figure out how to “capture the metaphysical aspect of [my] subject.” jim also said that evolving as a photographer is incremental. i think i had a mini-breakthrough with tommy.

when i first saw tommy he was on the other side of the street involved in an altercation. his foe was wielding a golf club (it was a driver) and he was brandishing a folding chair.

“fuck you! stay out of my garbage, mothafucka!”

“i’m gonna bash your fuckin’ head in!”

when they finally separated i moved in to talk to tommy, who was now holding a leg that he had broken off of the chair.

we talked for a while. it didn’t take him long to tell me that he had three different types of cancer and was a veteran of desert storm.

i told him to take care of himself and stay out of trouble.

“fuck it. i only have 6 months to live.”

i have a feeling i’ll be seeing tommy again.
